Club Visit to Pear Trees Garden

Taking advantage of the longer evenings, this meeting was a visit to the lovely garden at Pear Tree Cottage in Elder Street, Wimbish. Although the previous days  witnessed the long-awaited and much needed rain, members and friends were blessed with dry weather.

The Bayliss family moved into the cottage in 1995 and the garden then was a blank canvas. Over the years, with the help of their son, they have transformed it into a garden for all seasons with a very productive vegetable patch, chickens and an enormous mistletoe plant growing from an old apple tree.

Photographs and a book showing how the garden has evolved over the years were available for all to see. Julie Bayliss described its transformation as a lot of trial and error. Last year was the first time they had nervously opened their garden for the National Garden Scheme and were  surprised with the positive response they received.

Backing onto fields, members were also able to watch the local barn owl undertaking its nightly search for food, a sight you do not see every day.
