The Science of Plants

Mr Brian Carline, our March Guest Speaker gave a very entertaining and informative talk on “The Science of Plants”. The talk opened with a reminiscence of the radio programme “Round the Horne” and the character Arthur Fallowfield, whose catchphrase was “ …the answer is in the soil”.

Throughout the evening, members were given tips and advice on how to improve their garden soil, the peatless bags of compost now sold, what to look for if plants start to “look poorly” and what to feed them etc., as well as showing the ideal watering can that enables precise watering techniques.

Specialising in fuchsias and pelargoniums (he takes 100’s of cuttings a year) members enjoyed his anecdotes about his failings (not all of his own making as his son can testify!) and achievements over the years. A selection of his plants were available to purchase.
